This number is less than half the total number of nominees (this year is the first when 10 are nominated instead of 5), which may add to the argument that this year, the Academy is rewarding films that it sees not only as having quality critically but also doing well at the box office. Last year, for example, of the 5 nominees for Best Picture--The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, and Slumdog Millionaire--4 were adapted scripts; 3 from books and one from a play. None of them were big box office hits at the time of their nominations. That's a comparison of 40% adapted scripts this year to 80% last year.
Oscar Nomination 2010, The Blind Side seems to be the most surprising nomination for Best Picture this year among analysts and goes against the theory that more popular movies come from original scripts and more critically acclaimed films come from adaptations. It's probably the best example of a movie this year that audiences have shown they liked at the box office that may have gone under the radar of Academy voters otherwise. The Blind Side is a football story based on the book by Michael Lewis and has earned over $237 million at the box office, according to boxofficemojo.com. Compare that to Slumdog Millionaire, which won Best Picture in 2009 and earned a total of $141 million domestically, even after winning the award.
The Academy Awards will be presented at a ceremony held at the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles on March 7, 2010.
